University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine
  • Job Type

The University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine seeks an outstanding academic pediatrician to serve as the next Chair, Department of Child Health.  This is an extraordinary opportunity for a new Chair to strategically expand care, research and training vital to pediatric health in Missouri and beyond.

The Department of Child Health, with 62 faculty and 18 residents, trains physicians, fosters innovation through discovery and application and provides health care of the highest quality.  As part of a comprehensive academic health center, the Department prides itself on educating physicians in an environment rich in innovative care and research.

The Department is housed in the University Women’s and Children’s Hospital.  The 159-bed, freestanding hospital provides the region’s most comprehensive and complete health care services and technology to meet the special needs of women and children.  The Department offers comprehensive multidisciplinary care in pediatric specialties and offers the region’s only pediatric transport service to its neonatal and pediatric intensive care units.

The Department is a vital component of the University of Missouri Health Care (UMHC) located in Columbia, Missouri, which offers one of the most comprehensive health care networks in Missouri.  UMHC includes five hospitals and 500 staffed beds.  UMHC has implemented a shared governance model, which links leadership of the hospital and the School of Medicine leading to an integrated approach to strategic planning and operations that incorporates the tripartite mission of patient care, education and scientific discovery.

MU is one of the few institutions in the country with colleges of medicine, veterinary medicine, agriculture, engineering, nursing, and health professions on one campus.  At MU’s comprehensive academic medical center, scientists join clinicians in producing lifesaving discoveries and delivering them to patients through a far-reaching network of hospitals, clinics, and telehealth sites.  The School of Medicine’s more than 660 faculty physicians and scientists educate more than 1,100 medical students, residents, fellows and other students seeking advanced degrees.  Their research is focused on potential lifesaving discoveries that focus on the most prevalent health problems for the state and nation.  The School is divided into 16 clinical and five basic science departments.

Applicants must hold an MD or MD/PhD degree, current certification by the American Board of Pediatrics, must have or be able to obtain a Missouri medical license, and possess academic accomplishments that merit appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure.  The applicant will be expected to foster collaborative interactions between clinical and basic science faculty members within the Department and the School, and work constructively with a culturally diverse faculty and student body.  The next Chair will work closely with the Dean of the School of Medicine, the CEO of the University of Missouri Health Care (MUHC) and the Executive Director of the University Women’s and Children’s Hospital to enhance integration and productivity through multidisciplinary collaboration.

The University has a strong commitment to diversity and encourages applications and nominations from traditionally underrepresented groups. Applicants should include a current vitae and cover letter reviewing the candidate’s experiences, strengths, and accomplishments, as well as the names and contact information for three references. Confidential inquiries, nominations, expressions of interest and candidate materials should be submitted via email to the University of Missouri’s search consultants, Jeff Schroetlin and Kerry Quealy at MUChildHealth@wittkieffer.com; phone 630-575-6159.

The University of Missouri values diversity and is committed to equal opportunity for all persons regardless of age, color, disability, ethnicity, marital status, national origin, race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, veteran status or any other status protected by law.
