VA Connecticut Healthcare System is recruiting a full-time Supervisory Medical Instrument Technician (Echocardiography) for our main campus in West Haven, CT.  The individual will be responsible for the full administrative and professional responsibility for planning and directing the work of subordinates.  Additionally, this technician is responsible for performing echocardiography exams which range from routine to complex in all echocardiography modalities.  The Supervisory Medical Instrument Technician (Echocardiography) operates diagnostic equipment to graphically record the position and motion of the heart walls or the internal structure of the heart and neighboring tissue by the echo obtained from beams of ultrasonic waves directed through the chest wall.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for planning and directing the work of subordinate technicians
  • Assign and evaluate the work of subordinate staff
  • Provide training to technical staff
  • Provide Echocardiography services in more complex cases
  • Interpret preliminary results of echocardiograms and communicate abnormal results that require urgent or emergent physician intervention
  • Perform real time 3-D cardiac ultrasound utilizing online and offline computer enhancement and reconstructions
  • Perform stress echocardiograms, saline contrast studies, and contrast echocardiography
  • Assist physicians in Transesophageal echocardiography
  • Maintains library of echocardiogram tapes
  • Insert intravenous lines into patients when needed

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Knowledge of the more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures, to evaluate and initiate performance improvement projects, and to write policies, procedures, and protocols, that pertain to Echocardiography.
  2. Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements.
  3. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels.
  4. Ability to manage and supervise employees.
  5. Ability to provide, or provide for, staff development and training.
