JOB SUMMARY:
At the GS-12 level If hired at the GS-12 grade level, the Incumbent will serve as a microbiologist and technical advisor for systems, policies and procedures supporting the conduct of research activities. At the GS-13 level
If hired at the GS-13 grade level, the Incumbent will serve as a Senior microbiologist and Senior advisor for systems, policies and procedures supporting the conduct of research activities.

'As an Microbiologist you will: GS-12 Serve as a microbiologist and technical advisor for systems, policies and procedures supporting the conduct of research activities. Be responsible for the conception, development and evaluation of electronic information systems with select agent and toxin registrations. Conduct inspections, as needed, of biological high containment facilities (BSL-2, 3, and 4), to determine that they are in compliance with the regulations and are working with select agents and toxins in a safe and secure manner. Provide outreach to U.S. entities regulated under 42 CFR Part 73 and to train and assist in meeting regulatory requirements. Conduct quality assurance and quality control activities. GS-13: Serve as a microbiologist and senior advisor for systems, policies and procedures supporting the conduct of research activities. Serve as senior technical advisor responsible for the conception, development and evaluation of the electronic information systems with select agent and toxin registrations. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Basic Qualifications:
GS-12 and GS-13 grade levels Applicants must have a degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent from an accredited college and/or university; OR Have a combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. **In addition to meeting the basic education requirements listed above, applicants must have (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lowest grade level in the Federal service as defined in the following paragraphs. Minimum Qualifications: For GS-12: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 level of difficulty and responsibility in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph. Specialized experience is experience at or equivalent to which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include experience as a microbiologist and technical advisor in the development, improvement, and evaluation of technology, strategies, processes, and procedures to monitor and assess laboratory activities. Minimum Qualifications: For GS-13 Applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 level of difficulty and responsibility in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph. Specialized experience is experience at or equivalent to which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include experience as a microbiologist and senior technical advisor in the development, improvement, and evaluation of technology, strategies, processes, and procedures to monitor and assess laboratory activities. Documenting Experience: In accordance with Office of Personnel Management policy, federal employees are assumed to have gained experience by performing duties and responsibilities appropriate for their official series and grade level as described in their position description. Experience that would not normally be part of the employee's position is creditable, however, when documented by satisfactory evidence, such as a signed memorandum from the employee's supervisor or an SF-50 or SF-52 documenting an official detail or other official assignment. The documentation must indicate whether the duties were performed full time or, if part time, the percentage of times the other duties were performed. It is expected that this documentation is included in the employee's official personnel record. In order to receive credit for experience in your resume that is not within the official series and grade level of your official position, you must provide a copy of the appropriate documentation of such experience as indicated above.
