UNIT MANAGER    JOB DESCRIPTION




 


$2500.00 Sign On Bonus to be paid out in (3) three installments during the first successful year of employment.


 


Purpose of Your Job Position


The primary purpose of this job position is to assist the Director of Nursing in planning, organizing, developing, and supervising the Nursing Department in accordance with current Federal, State, and local standards, guidelines and regulations that govern our facility to ensure that the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times.  This includes timely reporting of the residents initial and subsequent assessments as mandated by Federal and State requirements.


 


Delegation of Authority


As the Unit Manager your direct supervisor is the Director of Nursing.  You are responsible for supervision of the Charge Nurses and Nursing Assistants and are accountable for carrying out your assigned duties.


 


Major Duties and Responsibilities



  1. Assist the DON in planning, developing, organizing, implementing, evaluating, and directing the Nursing Department as well as its programs and activities in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern the long-term care facility.

  2. Assist the DON in implementing the appropriate plans of action to correct identified problem areas.

  3. Provide feedback to the DON regarding resident care and operational issues.

  4. Assist the DON in providing performance reviews for all nursing staff.

  5. Assist in survey (inspection) made by the authorized government agencies.

  6. Serve in capacity of Charge Nurse as needed.

  7. Fulfill the Director of Nursing duties in his/her absence as directed by the DON or Administrator.

  8. Schedule, coordinate, attend, and participate in Care Plan meetings as needed.

  9. Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, charting, etc. as necessary.

  10. Teach and lead staff to perform their job duties within Federal, State, industry-wide guidelines and practices as well as those established safety regulations in the use of equipment/supplies.

  11. Assist in the recruitment and selection of nursing personnel.

  12. Assist the DON in scheduling staff requirements for each shift to ensure that quality care is maintained.

  13. Develop methods of coordination of nursing services with other resident services to ensure the continuity of each residents total regimen of care.

  14. Assist the DON with absenteeism monitoring to ensure that an adequate number of nursing care personnel are on duty at all times.

  15. Ensure that disciplinary action is administered fairly and without regard to race, color, creed, national origin, age, sex, religion, veteran status, handicap, or marital status in accordance with company policies.

  16. Assist with the implementation and maintenance of an effective orientation program that orients the new employee to the facility, its policies and procedures, and to his/her job description.

  17. Assist in conducting mandatory in-services for staff ensuring that all staff attend and receive the appropriate in-services via State and Federal regulations.

  18. Make daily rounds of the Nursing Department to ensure that all nursing personnel are performing their work assignments in accordance with acceptable nursing standards.

  19. Assist with the implementation and maintenance of the resident admission and discharge policy for the facility.

  20. Ensure that nursing staff are prepared and rooms are ready for the new resident.

  21. Review the nurses notes to ensure that they are objective and descriptive of the nursing care being provided and that they reflect the residents response to the care.

  22. Encourage attending physicians to record and sign progress notes, physicians orders, etc. on a timely basis and in accordance with current regulations.

  23. Recommend to the DON the usage of restraints only when all other options have been investigated; on a regular basis, monitor for follow-up to reduce restraints.

  24. Monitor floors for proper turning/positioning, bathing, call lights, etc.

  25. Assist in the completion census information and monitor all charting of nurses for compliance with State and Federal regulations (assessments and plan of care).

  26. Ensure all PAASSRR screen, level of care, transfer forms, etc. are complete at the time of admission.

  27. Assist the DON in the development, implementation, and maintenance of a program for monitoring communicable and/or infectious diseases among the residents and facility staff.

  28. Help the DON develop, maintain, and periodically update infection control precautions and aseptic techniques that successfully correct problem areas.

  29. Assist in monitoring infection control safety issues including equipment and supply storage.

  30. Make rounds of nursing unit(s) for the purpose of case findings, review of environmental sanitation procedures and supervision of isolation precautions/practices/standard precautions.

  31. Ensure that nursing personnel follow established infection control procedures when isolation precautions become necessary.

  32. Consult with housekeeping on infection control procedures for the handling of clean and soiled laundry/linen.

  33. Monitor medication passes/treatments to assure that appropriate hand washing techniques are followed in the handling and administration of drugs, medications, and treatments.

  34. Assist the DON with coordinating and overseeing of the annual resident flu vaccine program.

  35. Assist in evaluating residents care needs with the resident, personnel, and family.

  36. Participate in and promote the Continuous quality Improvement/Performance Improvement Program as required.

  37. Report/document any accidents or incidents assisting in the investigation of these occurrences.

  38. Responsible for the coordination and completion of MDS accurately and in a timely fashion.

  39. Evaluate the effectiveness of the Plan of Care and assist in documenting changes and/or revision to the plan.

  40. Establish and attend Resident Care Conferences.

  41. Assist in coordinating and implementing the individual therapy needs for each resident outlined by the physicians orders and resident care plan.

  42. Confer with interdisciplinary team individually and in conference to exchange, discuss, and evaluate patient information for planning, modifying, and coordinating restorative programs and implementing the residents care plans.

  43. Ensure that all nursing staff are incompliance with residents rights.

  44. Assist in reporting complaints and grievances made by the resident and actions taken to resolve the complaints or grievances.

  45. Ensure that all resident care rooms, treatment areas, etc. are maintained in a clean, safe, and sanitary manner.

  46. Maintain confidentiality of all resident care information.

  47. Assure that all residents receive care in a manner and in an environment that maintains or enhances their quality of life and care.

  48. Assure that each resident received the necessary nursing, medical, and psycho-social services to attain and maintain the highest possible mental and physical functional status.

  49. Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest, and positive emphasis as well as a calm environment throughout the facility.

  50. Maintain a good rapport and act as liaison with families and residents.

  51. Attend and participate in continuing education programs designed to keep abreast of changes in profession as well as to maintain licensure on a current status.

  52. Attend required in-services regarding various topics and Corporate Compliance.




QUALIFICATIONS/COMPETENCIES:


EDUCATION


Must possess, as a minimum, a Nursing Degree from an accredited college or university


 


LICENSURE


Unencumbered Registered Nurse License (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse License (LPN)


 


EXPERIENCE


Must have, as a minimum, three (3) years experience in long-term care or other related health care facility.


Must have, as a minimum, six (6) months training experience in rehabilative and restorative nursing practices


Must have in-depth knowledge of State and Federal Nursing Home regulations and nursing practices and procedures.


Must possess outstanding leadership abilities and communication skills.
